Mahershala Ali had a pretty big night last night. He took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Green Book, which also won Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 2019 Academy Awards. This is actually the second time Ali has taken home the award, having also won in 2017 for his performance in Moonlight (which, that same year, also won Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay). That the final episode of True Detective: Season 3 ?another incredible vehicle for Ali's acting ?also aired during the awards ceremony was the icing on the cake. And while all of this was going on, Ali was rocking a pretty incredible fake watch in the Santos de Cartier Skeleton. Like I said, it was a big night.
The fake watch in question is a particularly interesting choice because it blends Cartier's design history with its fine watchmaking abilities. The basics of the fake watch are built on the still-relatively-new Santos, released back in early 2018, which updated the century-old classic to be a bit more streamlined and contemporary. This fake watch is in the "large" size (39.8mm x 47.5mm) and is made of stainless steel. It still uses the quick-change and SmartLink-equipped bracelet and all the little design cues are right on point. However, in place of the silvered dial we get the openworked Caliber 9611 MC, an in-house movement whose bridges form the Roman numeral markers for the hours. The result is a fake watch that has a bit of an industrial-chic edge to it, while still looking very classically Cartier. And on Ali's wrist, it looked damn good, if I may say so myself.
